He grew up in a ghetto called Villa Fioritos in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. He maked his debut for Argentinos Juniors as only 15 years old and he soon moved on to Argentine giants Boca Juniors. He started his 11 years long career in FC Barcelona which also took him to Napoli in Italy and Seville in Spain before ending his career in his beloved Boca Juniors.

He was know for his outstanding technique and his quick movement. His goal against England in the 1986 World Cup has been awarded as the best goal ever scored in the World Cup.
