On 6^th October 2001, England played Greece in the FIFA World Cup qualification. England needed to draw or win the match in order to qualify for the World Cup, but they were loosing 2 – 1 with little time remaining. In injury time England was awarded a free-kick eight yards outside the Greek penalty area. Beckham took the free-kick and scored with a stunning curling strike which sent England to the World Cup.
